Winterwest Farm is a 200+ acre farm located in Blairstown, New Jersey just 1+ hour west of NY City, in the scenic northwest part of NJ. The farm has been in the Winter family since 1966. We primarily raise grass fed Hereford beef cattle in an environmentally sustainable manner with rotational grazing. They are very tame and are raised organically, but not yet certified. We choose the Hereford breed because of their ability to do well on grass and produce a healthy, tender, & tasty product.
Besides cattle, Winterwest Farm produces quality Boer goats, hybrid brown chickens along with their eggs, and round and square hay bales produced during the summer months.
Hereford breed animals have the ability to thrive on a diet of pasture grasses which results in a healthier animal, and a better tasting, healthier meat. Our cattle spend their time on pasture, foraging for food, finding the shady place when it is hot, and coming into the barn for protection against the wind and cold in winter.
The Boer goat is a breed of goat that was developed in South Africa in the early 1900s for meat production. Boer goats are a popular breed for meat and their breeding season starts in August and runs through December. Mixed goats are best for small herd because of the genetics in boer for meat and the gentics in the other goat.
Brown Egg Layers are a hybrid cross between a White Rock egg-layer type female and a Rhode Island Red male. The mature layer weighs about 5 pounds and is very docile, making it the ideal layer for small family farm flocks as well as large commercial operations.
Our grass-fed pasture rotation for our cattle is better for the animals and the environment. Most importantly, our cattle "give back" to the ground the nutrients that help the soil produce hay the following season. In the summer we harvest the excess pasture and feed it as hay in the winter or sell it at our local livestock co-op.
This farm is great! I get to roam around on 30+ acres. I have plenty of grass, have a fresh water source, and all the food I can eat! In the winter, the owner serves up round hay bales daily that he has worked all summer to harvest. My friends and I just love it here! We wouldn't go anywhere else (mostly because of the fences)!"Cassie Cow
I love this place! The owner sometimes lets us loose to go on hikes around the farm (if we promise not to leave). I find all sorts of things to eat like multiflora, weeds, and thistle which the owner wants to control anyway. So it's a win-win!"Billy
Being part of a working farm is pretty cool. I tend to crank out an egg a day for the owners and in return they keep me fed, watered, and safe. For most of the year, except in the winter, I get to go outside and scratch in the dirt. What a life!"HennyPenny
